Two is all you need. The Mattson 2 soothe the ears with their glossy surf jazz. We spoke with Jared (guitar maestro). Catch a glimpse of what they’re up to. If you’re on the west coast catch them on tour this month, otherwise dive into this tasty playlist they’ve made just for you.
Fresh Pots: So how did this dynamic duo come into existence?
Jared Mattson: In our mother’s womb! Jonathan’s first kick drum was the womb while my first stringed instrument was the umbilical chord
FP: From jamming with Ray Barbee to writing an album with Chaz Bundwick, you guys have done some rad collaborations. Are there any others in the works or ones you hope to happen soon?
JM: Every record we have done has featured a guest artist. While I love that approach and will never stop doing that, what we’re working on right now is our first real debut as a 100% duo. No guests. Just the Mattson 2. We are incorporating vocals and a very specific sonic pallets. We are extremely excited for this record as it will display a more digestible side of us but not at the cost of virtuosity or face melting... and of course improvisation.
FP: How was it opening for Khruangbin?
JM: They are so incredible! It was lovely chilling with them. We really got each other as people. It’s always a rush to share the stage with a band that you love night after night hearing the same set is a plus since you can here idiosyncratic tweaks and evolution.
FP: Is it easier being in a band with siblings?
JM: I know no other way. I would assume so. The longer you know someone the easier it is to forgive things that might rub you the wrong way. When you're with someone you don’t really know you might be more quick to resort to impatience and you may accidentally offend them or vice versa, there could be some projected tension...
FP: You guys are currently on a mini tour, anything special planned for these shows? It’s awesome to see you back in San Diego, especially at the Casbah.
JM: New wardrobe (lol!)
The set we are developing is a festival type set. Immediate, diverse, and catchy. A fresh take on some old tunes we haven’t played in a while that a lot of fans have been wanting to hear. We will incorporate some vocals as we play some of the new jammers. We will also road test some “future” tunes.
FP: Whats 2019 looking like?
JM: We will be releasing a new record on Chaz’s Company label that we are super excited about! With that will come a new tour with killer festivals sprinkled in. We want to get more active with sharing weekly playlists as well! We are really looking forward to Treefort Music Fest in Boise.
FP: Lastly, how do the Mattson 2 take their coffee?
JM: HOT with cream of course!!!! No sugar! None of that oily over roasted highly acidic stuff! I want the fruity perfectly roasted stuff!
